OK, this fantastic and pretty fast all-water board is the SUP I have presently and have been training on, which I hopefully will not use in the race since I'm working on having a new Splinter SUP that is currently being built - an 18' x 24". But this is what I'm entering here because nothing is guaranteed in life, especially not new custom equipment under pressure.

Description

Our boat, the Manu-o-Kū, is a Wharram Hitia 17′ that we custom-built for the 2015 Race to Alaska in just over a month. We have made quite a few modifications to the plans of James and Hanneke, most importantly using lighter materials and converting the lazarets to a sheltered place just large enough for a sleeping human. This lets us take shelter in the hulls during inclement weather -- which we hope will blow in around 9pm on Seventy48 to give us an advantage as the heaviest boat in the fleet (135 kg empty). In addition to taking paddles (in the spirit of the Sea Runners and First Nations canoeists who have plied the R2AK route for millennia) as backup or supplementary human power, our primary propulsion is a pedal drive mounted on a fore-and-aft aluminum beam, an innovation based on the R&D accomplished by Matt Johnson and Rick Wills during Matt's previous pedal boat builds for the R2AK.

The Maas Double is designed as an open water racing shell. Despite the narrow (14.75″) waterline beam excellent stability is achieved through a slightly flattened hull section shape and a low center of gravity. Rough water stability and dryness are enhanced by the flared hull form above the waterline. As on all our shells the externally bonded hull to deck lip reduces spray and adds stiffness. Other open water features include minimum volume cockpits, optional self bailers and carbon fiber splash guard.
Construction is of carbon fiber for stiffness; direct sized ‘S’ glass for impact resistance; syntactic foam core for panel stiffness and vinylester resin for toughness and ease of repair. There is a carbon fiber foam core stringer that adds substantially to longitudinal stiffness. Exterior finish is 4-6 mil gelcoat.

Our boat is a handcrafted 16' Loudon double hull, lapstrake rowing boat by Rossiter Boats of Ontario, Canada. the boat is owned by our team mentor and rowing coach Captain Mike Flemming of Port Townsend. He has graciously loaned this beauty to our team for this race. George Rossiter, a marine architect, started to build streamlined wooden rowboats which a person could find both fitness and peace forty years ago. The company now builds fiberglass hulls with teak to accents. They are hydrodynamic, smooth-in-the water boats.

The Coaster is a cult classic, a very popular boat back in its day. It is a short kayak with soft chines that allow it to turn by edging the boat. A rudder is not necessary making this an excellent boat in rough conditions because there are no rudder parts to fail. Mine is made of fiberglass (Kevlar was an option). The coaster is considered a slow kayak. Because of its short length and chines it can be turned quickly so it is a good boat to use exploring a rocky coastline. The hull has a slight V bottom with two planing surfaces that surf very well. The boat has a large volume in the bow making it nearly "pearl-proof" (the nose does not dive into the bottom of a wave and flip you over). It is a blast to surf this boat!

Description

The boat is a 14 foot Cosine Wherry, designed by Bob Picket of Flounder Bay Boat Lumber in Anacortes (no longer in business). This boat was built in Portland Oregon by Bill Farr, completed in 1995. She is strip planked and can be rowed by one or two comfortable. Bill and I competed in the Wooden Boat Festival Saturday morning rowing race in her for around 4 years. Bill and Ellen Farr camp cruised in the wherry in Barkley Sound in the 1990s. In the summer of 1997 we put the wherry aboard Sundown a 1925 British Columbia seiner converted to a charter yacht which I co-captained the length of the Inside Passage. The wherry was joy to row at numerous anchorages in British Columbia and SE Alaska. Bill and Ellen Farr are my in-laws. I do not have a photo of the wherry at this time.

Description

The boat is an experimental/ concept design based off of modern surfski, whitewater slalom, and whitewater playboats. The goal was to combine the length (speed) of a surfski with the control/ planing hull of whitewater boats to make a hybrid boat that should (in theory) excel in flatwater and also in bigger wind conditions. I designed the boat last summer after the Seventy48, and started the build process in December. As of now (March 5), it's almost completed, just a lot of small tasks left!
Overall, it's going to be 20' length, 18.5" width, likely painted white with a blue bow. Probably the most distinct feature will be the reverse "wave-piercing" (a.k.a. weed-catching) bow. The uploaded photos are of the almost-complete, non-painted boat- along with an idea of what it'll look like with the paint job.

This is the first DRB20, designed by Clint Chase when I said I wanted to build a DRB18 with a sliding seat for Seventy48. I picked up the kit, cut by Turn Point Design in PT, on February 14th and launched her May 25th... 2.5 weeks before the race. The lines are based on Norwegian faerings, but it's more of a rowing wherry. It's made out of 6mm okoume plywood planks, with a spruce keel and inwales and killer CVG Alaskan Yellow Cedar gunwales. The rigger is a carbon fiber wing I designed with the help of Russell Brown and built myself.

Sliding seat open water / sheltered water rowing boat. Epoxy / glass sandwich of marine ply. Construction method stitch and glue hull of faceted chines.
At least that's the plan and I'm in process of building it right now (Dec thru Feb). Once the hull is complete I'll figure out a sliding seat rowing station and what oars will work best. I hope to have everything complete by the end of April to see if it all works and maybe get some practice rowing in!
