Vetting Requirements

There’s no checklist of mandatory qualifications – but you’ll need to show you can handle yourself out there.
Each team submits an adventure résumé (one for each crew member) for review by the (mysterious and discerning) Vetting Team, and they should show that you can:

Navigate confidently—day and night
Understand and follow lighting rules and night-travel regulations
Provide basic first aid and manage emergencies
Row, paddle, or pedal for long stretches
Use a marine radio effectively
Stay aware and avoid collisions
Plan and execute a voyage
Repair or improvise fixes for your vessel when things go sideways

Your boat gets vetted too. The Vetting Team considers:

Design and construction
Buoyancy and stability
Safety equipment and readiness

It doesn’t need to be fancy—or even look like a “boat” in the traditional sense—but it does need to be seaworthy and legal.

We pair what we know about you with what we see in your vessel. A strong crew in a strange craft might get through; a green crew in a questionable one probably won’t.

At the bottom of this page, your commitment gets real. Applying costs $50, and it’s non-refundable.
That fee means your team and your vessel will actually be reviewed—because not every dreamer with a paddle belongs on the starting line.

After you’re accepted (hooray!)

Give us a couple of weeks for the vetting—you will be directed to a long and irritating registration form. There are lots of people looking for information, not just us. Search and Rescue agencies are interested too, just to give you an idea. (It’s probably a triple-shot form, whiskey or coffee, take your choice.)

Costs

50 bucks to apply
If you are accepted:

300 bucks per team.
That covers your entry, GPS tracker, and $100 towards the prize pot.

+$75 per additional crew member.

This year, no more tracker deposit. Instead, we’re holding you accountable in another way – if it dissapears or goes to the bottom, you’ll be charged the full replacement cost. (Somewhere around $450).

The Slacker Tax.

Being accepted isn’t being in—you’re only in once you register, and that’s when we start working for you.

We don’t do early-bird deals or keychains. We just charge more if you make us wait.

Register after March 15, and it’ll cost $50 more.

Save us the scramble—register as soon as you’re accepted.

Cancellations

Cancellations must be received in writing (email ok) 60 days prior to the event. We’ll keep 30% to teach you a lesson.
Cancellations made less than 60 days prior to event will not be refunded.
If we cancel, 100% of fees can be refunded.

And so you know, we’re pumped for this. It’s a hot minute before this race starts, but we’ll all be on the water soon, and it’s gonna be a hell of a time.
