SEVENTY48: 2021 Recap
It’s in the rush of the southerly across the finish line we can almost hear the outake of breath and pulse of blood in each person who crossed over from “doing the race” to “done the race.” That means finishing the 3rd ever SEVENTY48. It’s coming at twilight here, as we approach the solstice and the longest day of the year, and we finally have a moment to think about what has happened.
Team Dad somehow pulled down a third place finish after breaking a rudder and pulling over to find a meal. (That really happened.) Our youngest racer ever, Akeyla Behrenfeld, who raced in 2019 in Team Spineless Spinunculas at age 12, and finished solo this year at age 14, coming in just after midnight under the name Team Tardigrade. And Team USDB, the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind, didn’t make it to the finish line but took honors for overcoming more adversity—convince a school, build a boat, train a crew and tackle this pounding weather—than any team since we started this thing.
Well, a ton of people have pulled this race off and if even half the teams have experienced stories like the ones we’ve heard we’re calling it successful. Hard fought, sweet won, difficult losses and celebration throughout the way. More than half the teams didn’t finish, in fact, but it makes them no less courageous or audacious. Every stroke, every calorie, every moment means that these racers have earned it all. Here’s the list of the 2021 SEVENTY48 finishers and a tip of the hat for those you gave it their all.
